I have a question for anyone here who also reads Mercedes Lackey's Valdemar series (which Stephen calls "My Little Pony Goes to War" :-> ) as a guilty pleasure: In Winds of Fury, the queen's daughter Elspeth says she's abdicating as heir in favor of her half-siblings partially because some people are suspicious of her because of her traitorous father, who first lied to her mother to get her to marry him and then tried to assassinate her. How is it that *no one* in that scene points out that her mother's second husband is her father's *brother* and is now the country's co-ruler, or that her half-sibs therefore also share that family's blood?

This really bugs me - am I the only one who's noticed this?

That's one of the books I never managed to get my hands on, so I was very surprised by this development later; but it would probably have escaped me completely, simply because the politics weren't interesting enough.
