[With apologies to Sports Illustrated]

John Thune, who is trying to unseat Senate Minority Leader Tom Daschle in South Dakota, has opposition to gay marriage as his central issue. He is a third-term Congressman and an evangelical Christian who does not believe in evolution. And this is predicted to be among the closest races in the country. How have we come to this?

Your country contains swathes of people who are Christian and who don't believe in evolution. And people vote for folks who are "just like them".

What's new is that they're not afraid to piss others off by talking about it.

But we haven't "come to this." This is where we are today, true. But if you look back far enough (to say, the Scopes Monkey Trial), you get the perspective that we are slowly but inexorably headed in the right direction. It's kind of like the stock market: there are dips and recessions, but they take place within an upward curve.

Or to put it another way, it wasn't that long ago that mainstream opinion was farther to the right than John Thune is today.
