Now that we know the results for Game of Thrones at the Emmy Awards (yay for Peter Dinklage winning but boo for not acknowledging the great character [livejournal.com profile] grrm created), it's time to get down to the other important aspect of the evening

Ooooh, Shiny

Lots of glitz this year

Rachael Taylor in shimmering pink.

Taraji P Henson doesn't look bad, exactly, but I think I would have liked either the bronze flower pattern or the silver shimmer but not both.

Maria Bello in well-fitting single-shouder Grecian silver design, but with very messy hair with visible roots and no visible makeup.

More messy hair on Cat Deeley but nice beaded gold accents on white tulle. (This looked better on TV than in a static photo.)

Jennifer Carpenter also had silver accents on tulle but a bit sexier (and not as flattering) design.

Maria Menounos in shiny black - good fit and possibly the best hair of the night.

Claire Danes in an interesting blue-and-black patterned material. Would have liked to see a necklace and bracelet with this to pull it together rather than it riding on the material alone.

Painting the Town

Red was definitely the "in" color of the night.

Kate Winslet could have used more design elements than just her boobs playing peek-a-boo, but nice fit.

I like the cap sleeve design on Lea Michele but I would have liked something to break up the high-neck plain bodice. The flat hair didn't work for me either. However, the back was fabulous.

I like the neckline on Adrianne Palicki but could have lived without the slit, and the pucker at the seam down from the waist.

Angela Kinsey looks like she borrowed her (much taller and larger) mom's dress.

The pleated ruffled bodice and matching tiered train look good on Giuliana Rancic.

Great fit on Nina Dobrev and I like the necklace and hair as well. Nice that the designer tried for an interesting skirt but it's too heavy and it was also hard for her to manage while walking or doing stairs.

Kerry Washington looks stunning in red with an unusual transparent but tasteful skirt and perfect fit. This looked much better in movement than standing still.

Living Large

There were a number of plus-size women on the red carpet this year.

This pleated number on Amber Riley is too busy, the color is too bland, and the fit draws too much attention to her hips.

I don't think this dress on Melissa McCarthy is flattering: I'd have liked perhaps a wider skirt line and something to show off her bustline a bit more, maybe. This is relatively shapeless.

Retta Sirleaf in cheerful canary yellow, great for her skin tone and having the shape that Melissa's dress lacked.

Loretta Devine looks terrific in emerald green with a nice fit and interesting sleeves and jewelry.

Almost But Not Quite

I'm fond of shoulder pads but these make Evan Rachel Wood look like a linebacker. Dress has a nice fit and fishtail train, though.

I don't get the nude net midriff on Gwyneth Paltrow -- a solid black and interestingly shaped bodice might have rescued this sheer number from bad Barbra Streisand flashbacks.

At least the bright white on Julianna Margulies actually works, plus great shoes, but I dislike the bodice, which looks like it could walk by itself and has glass dots scattered on it like a fruit bowl.

Julie Bowen is too thin to carry this plunging neckline but the material is stunning: wish another designer had used it. I'm not fond of the straight ponytail either.

Junior division: I don't know which stylist dressed Ariel Winter but that person missed the mark here: she might have a bustline but IMHO at 13 they shouldn't be showcasing it. Similarly, why did they make Shipka Kiernan wear these high-heeled pointy-toed shoes?

The skirt on this blue metallic gown on Kyle Richards looks like a blue Jiffy-Pop bag but the fit is excellent and the rest of the dress is flattering.

Great fit and nice design on Padma Lakshmi but it's in this category because of the color, which blends right into her skin tone, and the slit, which doesn't work with the train.

I want to like this pleated number on Julia Stiles with a beautiful flowered lace skirt, but the pleating emphasises her hips and the bodice isn't flattering for a small bust.

I'd have liked the embroidery on Christina Hendricks much more if it had stopped under the bodice -- the added design at her tummy makes the dress too top heavy, which is the last thing she needs. It is beautiful and intricate work, though, and I'm glad they didn't shove the twins in the beholder's face as has sometimes happened.

Bad to the Bone

Rashida Jones: Bad fit, bad color, not a flattering style for her figure. Nice hair, though…

Jemma Mays wearing pink and ruffled layers in what fifth-grade girls might draw as their ideal dress. No excuse for the ugly net border cutting across her neck, either, or the bright pink lipstick. If you're doing pastel, do pastel!

Jane Krakowski in badly fitting shiny white with an uncalled-for brooch at the hip.

Still trying to figure out how the bodice on Paula Abdul can be at a different angle than her actual bust. The unflattering thick belt at the almost waist and unnecessary ruffles in the skirt don't help. For once, a close-up of the material makes it even less attractive.

Julianne Hough looks like she was dressed from the scrap heap of a designer's workshop: "Let's see, a bridesmaid pink satin skirt, a nude corset with a bit of pink satin folded at the edges, and this bit of black netting I have over here wrapped around the waist." The scraped-back hair doesn't help.

Paz de la Huerta looks like the prom queen on the morning after.

I think the dog chewed Emily Blunt's dress.

Amy Poehler in a whale-colored skin-diving suit.

Eva La Rue looks like she came straight from bellydancing class.

Minka Kelly in what might be the world's ugliest lace ruffles.

Between the high hairdo, the black darts up to the angled sleeves, and the excessive tiers of ruffles, Heather Morris looks like a comic book villainess.

The pleating on this dress on Kristen Wiig looks like it's dragging the bodice down, the bodice isn't flattering, and the color is deadening on her.

The color on Olivia Munn, OTOH, is anything but deadening - you need sunglasses to see this ill-fitting bright green number with a puzzling skinny belt and awning at the back. And is it me, or is that a fold crease at knee height?

Similar problems for Katie Holmes: Too-bright color? Check. Weird skinny belt? Check. Ill-fitting? Check.

Still more bright blue on Dianna Agron, and another ill-fitting and unflattering bodice. Do designers think that once they catch your attention with a retina-searing color their work is done?

Heidi Klum loyally wore a dress made by one of the past winners on her show, Project Runway, even though it looked like the skirt was made out of a giant cauliflower.

Sarah Hyland is a mess: both the style and the makeup are too old for her, the hair is a mess, and the shoes are too clunky for the chiffon. (This was apparently a collaboration between the actress and the same designer who did Heidi Klum's dress, which just confirms my decision never to watch Project Runway.)

Louise Roe dug her old Woodstock gown out of the closet and tucked the long hem at her waist.

Apparently there is some dissension online about Zooey Deschanel but I'm firmly in the "yuck" category: skirt is too wide for her figure, bodice doesn't fit, orange rope belt and earrings don't go with the gown and her hair looks like she's going straight afterward to the Country Music Association awards.

Lena Headey in nun-like black with puzzling hot pink shoes.

Worst of the Night: Vanessa Marano in a schizophrenic horror of a nude corset top and chiffon skirt with black edging at the bodice and black chiffon edging the hem and the side slit, and a tacky costume jewelry necklace.

Lovely to Look At

By far the best I've ever seen Martha Plimpton look: great fitting dress, good color on her, and actual styled hair.

Although I usually like floor-length gowns at awards ceremonies, I thought Kaley Cuoco looked great in a black cocktail dress with red shoes and clutch.

Kelly McDonald looks terrific in black with interesting designs on the sleeves and the flattering insets at the waist, which for a change actually make the wearer look slimmer rather than the reverse. Hair is the only minus on this.

Another interesting and flattering black-patterned gown on Lara Spencer.

Christine Baranski looks great in deep navy blue with a tailored bodice and mermaid skirt.

Cobie Smulders in turquoise, with interesting sleeves, great drop earrings, and a pleated waist that works with her figure and the dress.

Aubrey Plaza in white that actually works with her skin tone and a great bodice design for a smaller bust.

Elisabeth Moss wearing beautiful leaf-pattern accenting (close-up) on most of a blush-colored dress with clever transparent sleeves: perfect fit and flattering to her figure. The only reason this isn't best of the night is the color, which washes her out.

Best of the Night: Sofia Vergara in a stunner: nice pleated accents, absolutely perfect fit. Not sure about the exposed tulle under the skirt or the emerald earrings but I kept coming back to this as the stunner of the evening.
