Red Carpet Time!
It's the most wonderful time of the year: kicking off the award red carpet season
FYI, you can see a 360-degree rotating view of many of the dresses on the E! GlamCam.
Loved Claire Danes in red but I wish the crossover bodice had been caught at the waist in a more flattering way rather than leaving a bulge at the side.
Jennifer Garner in sparkly and flattering garnet.
Not fond of Marion Cotillard in a bias-cut awkward hemline and a distractingly disappearing belt.
The color is good for Zooey Deschanel and I love the hair and pearls but the too-large skirt overwhelms her. (Check out the movie-themed nail polish!)
Kristen Wiig looks like they forgot to sew the dress under her bodice back together.
OTOH, the peek-a-boo midriff on Nicole Kidman works well.
The queen of this trend tonight was Eva Longoria in a black dress with a beaded top and chiffon skirt.
Also in the act were supermodels Rosie Huntington-Whitely and Heidi Klum.
I wasn't fond of this schizophrenic creation on Halle Berry, which looked like the chiffon had got caught up in a sewing machine accident with a corset dress.
Katharine McPhee looks like every comic book super-villainess in a black overall top and an awkwardly split skirt.
(Another failed super-villainess look on Zosia Mamet, with the worst hair this year.)
Julianna Margulies has a great figure but I think the back displays a bit much for this particular awards night.
I think this white beaded sparkler would have been much more flattering on Lea Michele without the high slit.
Fellow Glee cast member NeNe Leakes apparently threw together her dad's shirt, a tie off some curtains, and some black material lying around that just missed being wide enough to go all the way around her waist.
Tip for Miranda Kerr – If you have to use your purse to hid your undies (at least, I hope that's what she's trying to hide), the slit in your dress is too high. Great earrings, though, not that anyone is looking at them...
First up, Jessica Chastain, widely touted to win her category (which she did), has a weird origami bodice that droops at the waist. I also think the baby blue color which, agreed, was not white or beige, was still too pale for her.
Naomi Watts is totally flattened by this clingy garnet number.
Note to the stylist for Mayim Bialik: If you have a client whose posture is not the best, don't use a stiff bodice that stands by itself, and while you're at it, don't stick on a belt either.
Jennifer Lawrence appears to have a shelf for her boobs.
Allison Williams in a split bodice that looks like someone forgot to give her a blouse to put under her vest.
The turquoise beaded bodice on Olivia Munn is striking and original but the band at the midriff and the white back are exceedingly odd.
Similarly, the gold embroidered high-necked top on Michelle Docherty is stunning but then fades to white jersey nothingness.
Kaley Cuoco could have used a bright color but the dress fits well and is flattering. (Would have gone with a lighter lipstick, too.)
There's more not-dress than dress on Jennifer Lopez but she almost managed to pull off this well-fitted life-sized doily.
I love the drama of this black-and-tan floral number on Julia Louis-Dreyfus but it seemed big on her.
Too pale a color for Megan Fox but fits like a dream and the more solid bodice works well with the chiffon skirt.
Another too-pale choice on Amanda Seyfried: the bodice is interesting, especially the lace falling through trimming at the waist to the skirt, but the mixture of fabrics and numerous design details make this a bit too busy.
Great color on Jessica Alba and love the necklace, the furry purse, and the great shoes, but the look is more bridesmaid than red carpet.
I don't get all the raves for Nicole Richie – I liked the color and the interesting material and beading, but I thought this gown made her look 20 years older than her actual age.
I like the choice of chocolate brown for Lena Dunham and the bodice and skirt stitching are interesting. However, if someone has visible shoulder tattoos, I think the shoulder treatment should work with them rather than cutting across them; otherwise, it's just distracting.
Looks like if Julie Bowen removed her hand, this whole bolt of fabric would fall to the floor in a heap.
Morena Baccarin looks like she's wearing a mother-of-the-bride dowdy pleated chiffon that someone tried to dress up with a beaded front panel down the middle, and then accidentally spilled something on the train.
Despite some good points for Amy Adams on fit and style, I moved this from just so-so to actually bad because of the tremendously unflattering color – with her pale skin, she completely disappears in this dress. Not fond of the 20s hair drooping on one side, either.
Good reviews for Rosario Dawson but I thought this flattened her bust line, made her waist look wide, and the cap sleeves were too narrow.
A black feathered creature is taking over this gown on Sarah Paulson. Too bad it didn't creep further up to hide the unflattering waistline.
Lucy Liu tries to be bold but upholstery fabric isn't the answer. Also hate the South Pacific side braid.
Debra Messing in ruched shredded black garbage bags.
Emily Mortimer looks like a disco ball in unflattering and way too clingy silver sequins.
Sienna Miller looks like she's trying out for a Hello Kitty movie in a crop-top with flowers in the fabric and some standing out from the fabric.
That look might have worked better on poor young Ariel Winter, also trying and missing on the colorful flower front. I've been begging her people to get her a new stylist for years: maybe now they'll finally listen.
Runner-Up for Worst of the Night: Kerry Washington in a silver-accented chiffon overdress with a useless and distracting belt accent, ugly neck band, and a solid skirt that cuts off at the top of her thighs, with an inexplicable solid back. Bizarre and unflattering.
Worst of the night: An attempt at color is the only thing good about this unflattering shapeless and wrinkled mess on Alyssa Milano, and the useless belt and mismatched turquoise earrings don't help.
Kristen Bell in one of the best pregnancy gowns I've ever seen; nice from the back as well. The bodice really sparkled when she was presenting.
Luckily, we got the good Helen Mirren this year - she looks terrific in form-fitting black with metallic embroidery.
Anne Hathaway in stunning white strapless crystal.
Wonderful construction on this gown on Hayden Panettiere and I think she has the tan to carry off the pale color. Great purse, too.
Considering how dowdy we've seen her at times, Sally Field looked great in navy chiffon with cap sleeves.
I liked the retro black-and-white on Julianne Moore but her hair looked better from the front than it did weirdly pointing out in the back.
Isla Fisher looks good in illusion shoulders with chandelier tiles.
Tina Fey is one of the few actresses who can get away with cocktail length on the red carpet, and this retro lace overlay strapless looked great on her, and her hair looked glamorous too. I also liked her sparkly teal host gown.
Runner-Up for Best of the Night: Julianne Hough in golden grommets with white tulle in the ultimate fairy godmother dress. Her hair was a bit punky but somehow worked.
Best of the Night: I was very glad to see Jodie Foster rise to the occasion of her receiving the Cecil B Demille Lifetime Achievement Award – this stunning blue beaded material with large flat beaded straps at the crossed halter neck is the best I've ever seen her look.
FYI, you can see a 360-degree rotating view of many of the dresses on the E! GlamCam.
Ladies in Red
Megan Hilty in a safe but nice draped chiffon. Would have liked some jewelry.Loved Claire Danes in red but I wish the crossover bodice had been caught at the waist in a more flattering way rather than leaving a bulge at the side.
Midriff Madness
Emily Blunt in a gold lace tablecloth with unnecessary midriff cutouts.Kristen Wiig looks like they forgot to sew the dress under her bodice back together.
OTOH, the peek-a-boo midriff on Nicole Kidman works well.
Slit Up to There
Is it me, or do slits seem to be standardly getting higher and higher? The queen of this trend tonight was Eva Longoria in a black dress with a beaded top and chiffon skirt.
Also in the act were supermodels Rosie Huntington-Whitely and Heidi Klum.
I wasn't fond of this schizophrenic creation on Halle Berry, which looked like the chiffon had got caught up in a sewing machine accident with a corset dress.

Bad Bodices
Separate category for these this year, as there were so many that made me scream during the red carpet show.First up, Jessica Chastain, widely touted to win her category (which she did), has a weird origami bodice that droops at the waist. I also think the baby blue color which, agreed, was not white or beige, was still too pale for her.

Allison Williams in a split bodice that looks like someone forgot to give her a blouse to put under her vest.
Oh, So Close
Taylor Swift in flattering (but, as always wrinkly) eggplant satin. Points for the flattering bodice but I have no explanation for the mesh side panels. Great hair and earrings. The turquoise beaded bodice on Olivia Munn is striking and original but the band at the midriff and the white back are exceedingly odd.
Similarly, the gold embroidered high-necked top on Michelle Docherty is stunning but then fades to white jersey nothingness.

Breaking Bad
Why did anyone think that a black dotted-swiss sheer skirt was appropriate for this baby-doll outfit on Rachel Weisz?Looks like if Julie Bowen removed her hand, this whole bolt of fabric would fall to the floor in a heap.
Morena Baccarin looks like she's wearing a mother-of-the-bride dowdy pleated chiffon that someone tried to dress up with a beaded front panel down the middle, and then accidentally spilled something on the train.

Argood
Kate Hudson in black jersey with gold accents and a stunning gold collar. The gold picked up her blonde hair but unfortunately, her hair often hid the collar - not sure why they didn't give her some sort of upsweep.Kristen Bell in one of the best pregnancy gowns I've ever seen; nice from the back as well. The bodice really sparkled when she was presenting.
Luckily, we got the good Helen Mirren this year - she looks terrific in form-fitting black with metallic embroidery.
