SAG Awards 2018 Red Carpet
Been a while since the timing was right for me to do one of these. As always, the SAG Awards are a rich source because so many people are nominated in various group categories. And many of them did not choose their fashion wisely...
Cara Buono in an ugly sheer kind-of-floral fabric and a silly sheer, flimsy cape.
Renee Bargh decided on trains for her arms instead of her skirt, and a relapse to the bare midriff trend (thankfully not much in evidence this year) and embarrassingly visible breast pads.
Laura Linney shows the danger of judging a gown from photos: in this shot this gown looks shapeless with a drooping overwhelming cape; in this shot, the fit looks much better and the cape moves well.
Nice flattering flowy look on Uzo Aduba but can't decide whether that's a train or one-shoulder cape.
Sunita Mani combines a short cape with surprise palazzo pants.
Samara Weaving (who looks remarkably like her Uncle Hugh) in candy pink - two-three inches higher on the bodice and this would have been fine. Even more plunge from the rear.
Interesting skiffy fabric on Samira Wiley but minus points for the to-the-navel plunge.
Laura Dern reverts to the dark side in the horrible draggy black and lavender sheer mess, with one of the most unflattering and ill-fitting bodices I've ever seen with a wimpy thin belt. No one with her posture should be wearing hardly any top.
I think Felicity Huffman pulls off the plunge and although I would have liked the necklace to be a little chunkier, at least there is one! (Nice hair and earrings, also - happy to see the good Felicity this time around.)
Keltie Knight in a pink nightgown with inexplicable red shoulder straps and incongruous high red heels.
Miscellaneous applique on Amanda Bruegel and copious application of boob tape. (Note the difference in bustline between the runway design and the red carpet dress.)
Great fit on Nicole Kidman and interesting bronze and brown material, but I will never understand her fondness for large fabric structures growing out of her shoulder.
Lupida Nyong'o sadly abandons her usual colors for shiny slate in a well-structured and well-fitted gown with a totally unnecessary and distracting sheer black shredded skirt laid on top.
Great bodice on Amanda Warren but the skirt with visible panty brief looks like a rhythmic gymnast outfit.
Wish Ryan Michelle Bathe had picked a different color for this but not a bad design. (And see how much better this bodice structure is for a small bust than the Alison Sudol disaster?)
Nice fit on Saoirse Ronan but the sequin "ribbons" are too stiff to lay well, the bodice flattens her out, and the slit reveals the seams necessary for the weights in the hem.
With a black skirt, this corset top might have worked on Gina Rodriguez but although the stained-glass fabric is interesting, it's a bit too busy to use in a somewhat shapeless skirt.
Halle Berry is back in an interesting sparkling floral fabric but not sure why they added the black sheer tulle skirt over it. Still inexplicable from the back.
I like the color and bodice on Margot Robbie but the skirt is too long and a Pomeranian appears to be wrapped around her waist.
This unusual combo of a fitted mock turtleneck top and a tulle skirt on Diane Guerrero might actually have worked if the skirt were slightly less enormous.
Kirsten Bell in a cheerful magenta with floral embroidery that actually fits well but needed better workmanship: the transition from the boned bodice to the fuller skirt is awkward and noticeable.
It's not bad exactly but this color is completely wrong on Madeline Brewer, the skirt length is too short, it needs a necklace, and the red lipstick and shoes are out of place. (Don't know whether US friends got the "Skittles pox" commercial but it's the first thing I thought of when I saw this dress :-> )
Great on Alison Brie for a night out; not a fan of the high slit and nekkid cutouts for a televised awards ceremony.
Dislike the stiff train on Susan Kelechi Watson but love the rest of this: the color, the bodice, the interesting folds at the waist.
Great dress for the Hugo ceremony but this zodiac-patterned giant skirt overwhelms Natalia Dyer.
Goldie Hawn in a bad facelift but a flattering soft aqua chiffon with an interesting draped asymmetric bodice and great jewelry.
Susan Sarandon in shiny navy and shades.
Not a big fan of pants on the red carpet usually but Jenifer Lewis looks great in colorful blue with great necklace.
Rita Moreno looks better than most of the women on the red carpet in this fire-engine red gown with a black shrug and she is 86 years old!
Kate Nash in a combo of a prairie dress and a Frederick's of Hollywood outfit.
Kate Hudson in a voluminous Miss Kitty outfit in pale pink.
Abbie Cornish apparently came straight from her audition from Little House on the Prairie, with too-long sleeves.
Milo Ventimiglia as a riverboat gambler.
I hope Elisabeth Moss picked out her own dress because otherwise her stylist should never work in that profession again: dresses with waistlines don't work on short-waisted women, the skirt is too short, and the center split is unflattering. (She also could use bangs to soften her forehead.)
All Millie Bobby Brown needs to complete this schizophrenic outfit is a large all-day lollipop sucker.
Surprised at how many props Yada Shahidi is getting for this outfit: it's certainly dramatic but the pants are too long and I find the trailing trains ridiculous and I'm sure uncomfortable to manage - shlepping your own skating ramps behind you does not a dress design make.
Loose waist, ugly pink sequins, and long sleeves don't flatter Connie Britton.
Taylor Schilling in a bathrobe by Diane Von Furstenberg.
Maya Randolph seems to have raided her granny's closet.
Someone did a disservice to Adrienne C. Moore by putting her in a structured gown too tight in various places and wrinkled in others.
Allison Williams in a confused combo of a structured bodice (with beautiful embroidery) with a chandelier overlay of fringe leading to a peek-a-boo fringed skirt. (And I couldn't help but think of the line from In & Out: "Eat something - you look like a swizzle stick!")
I am reliably informed that Alison Sudol is wearing a dress but in this pale pink practically topless Grecian chiffon she practically disappears. (And another small-busted woman refusing to face reality: this is cut too low and offers no support.)
I've got one guy in the Best list so to balance things out, here's Deon Cole in a costume from a road company of Guys and Dolls.
Jackie Cruz wearing the pelt of a lilac Bigfoot.
Greta Gerwig wearing puke-green candy-dot fabric.
Betty Gabriel in Colonial wallpaper.
Francis McDormand apparently grabbed this dress off the trim table before they could add any style or shape to it, she's inexplicably wearing green earrings, and her hair is a horror.
Maika Monroe has a Siamese twin dress attached to hers that looks like it's trying to escape and separate.
Yvonne Strahovski is apparently auditioning for Mad Men with too-short sleeves. (This view shows a slit, which is incongruous with the rest of the look.)
Molly Sims in a Frankenstein number seemingly made out of miscellaneous turquoise dotted-swiss scraps, with inexplicable purple shoes.
Jackie Tohn, the 70s are calling and they want their black-light neon back, even if you did gift wrap it with a giant bow.
Gayle Rankin in a black picket fence complete with flowers that got stuck on it.
Vanessa Kirby in a sheer shower curtain front and back.
Worst of the Night (there were many contenders): Sally Hawkins in a shapeless, eye-wincing dress version of the Hot Dog on a Stick uniform with an unfinished neckline and rolled-up sleeves. (Imagine my surprise to find out this is Dior Haute Couture!)
Terrific color, interesting fabric, and good fit on Leslie Mann and I like the keyhole bodice. (Skirt could have been a little shorter but that's being picky.)
Graduated grey pattern with faux handkerchief skirt makes Odeya Rush appear taller and great fit.
Flattering look on Ann Dowd: interesting but quiet fabric and overlay, and note that the seam is tucked in just past the bustline rather than at the true waist.
Would have been better in another color but nice to see a design on Eris Baker that works with her petite size, with some interest in the neckline and skirt.
Giuliana Rancic in a geometric beaded design, interesting shoulders, and a good fit.
Given her skin tone, I actually think this nude base color with an interesting beaded pleat design works on Selenis Leyva and a good fit.
Att'n thin ladies with small busts: instead of low-cut unflattering bodices cut down to *there*, try this look on Holly Hunter in gold satin
Vella Lovell In a flowy metallic fabric with an interesting fabric flow into the waist. Great hair and simple necklace. Interesting cut-out back too.
I don't usually mention dudes but Marcus Scribner gets a "Dude!"
I like the stand-up collar and color on Danielle Brooks.
Generally, tight fits don't work well on larger women but this striking green flowing number on Niecy Nash just makes you think "If you've got it, flaunt it"
Sydelle Noel in eye-popping yellow with an interesting waist and bodice.
Great fit on Allison Janney in this fish-scale mermaid-tail sparkler. (Not a great hairdo, though.)
Terrific color on Reese Witherspoon and the folded bodice/sleeve combo is interesting, as is the shaded arrow-stripe fabric.
Best of the Night: Mary J Blige in stunning and original black-and-white with a fabulous feather effect.
Tugging on Capes
Cara Buono in an ugly sheer kind-of-floral fabric and a silly sheer, flimsy cape.
Renee Bargh decided on trains for her arms instead of her skirt, and a relapse to the bare midriff trend (thankfully not much in evidence this year) and embarrassingly visible breast pads.

Sunita Mani combines a short cape with surprise palazzo pants.
The Plunge
Samara Weaving (who looks remarkably like her Uncle Hugh) in candy pink - two-three inches higher on the bodice and this would have been fine. Even more plunge from the rear.
Interesting skiffy fabric on Samira Wiley but minus points for the to-the-navel plunge.

Close But Not Quite
Great fit on Nicole Kidman and interesting bronze and brown material, but I will never understand her fondness for large fabric structures growing out of her shoulder.

Ladies of a Certain Age
Goldie Hawn in a bad facelift but a flattering soft aqua chiffon with an interesting draped asymmetric bodice and great jewelry.
Susan Sarandon in shiny navy and shades.
Not a big fan of pants on the red carpet usually but Jenifer Lewis looks great in colorful blue with great necklace.
Rita Moreno looks better than most of the women on the red carpet in this fire-engine red gown with a black shrug and she is 86 years old!
Little House on the Carpet
Kate Nash in a combo of a prairie dress and a Frederick's of Hollywood outfit.
Kate Hudson in a voluminous Miss Kitty outfit in pale pink.

Milo Ventimiglia as a riverboat gambler.
Le Bad

Magnifique
