SAG Awards Fashion 2019

The SAG Awards are so extensive that there's a lot of fashion to cover. (Note that I had to give up on negative comments about unflattering high slits because they were so ubiquitous.)

But

Lots of just-misses this year - not a lot of unqualified yesses.

This dress on Elizabeth McLaughlin had such promise: great fabric, well-fitted bodice, flattering high waist, but why the cut-out and especially why the pleated wide skirt on a non-flowing fabric?

Terrific fit on Emily Blunt and I like the candy pink color but not a fan of the plant-like shoulders creeping up to her ears.

Might be fine for a seaside resort but a bit cas for an evening awards ceremony on Gayle Rankin, and the detailing seems to oddly point to her boobs. Cool evening purse, though.

If only Ryan Michelle Bathe didn't have a furry feather duster at the bottom of this otherwise well-fitted and flattering sparkly number with a nice high collar and cap sleeves.

Not flattering to her figure and bad sleeves on Marianna Palka, but oh, that beadwork!

Hey, Yara Shahidi, if you're going to wear a catsuit, just wear the catsuit: the decorated transparent overlay is cool on top but the shapeless tulle from the waist down is pure craft store. (The shoes are also too dark for the outfit.)

Guess Emma Stone forgot she had to arrange for an outfit and just grabbed separates from her closet. I think the overall idea might have worked if this had been less asymmetric and the gold accenting had somehow been carried out at the waist and in the pant fabric.

Considering what we might have gotten from Lady Gaga, this really high slit and boy shorts is actually pretty classy, although I think the dark red lipstick is a mistake, the drape isn't flattering, and the skirt is too long and drags, which takes it out of the "good" running for me.

With a flowing and different color skirt, Rhea Seehorn might have pulled off this interesting bodice.

On the Border of But and Best: Fabulous bodice on Patricia Clarkson, love the way the design flows into the waist, and I could even forgive the pale color... but not the wacky floor-length sleeves.

Boys

For a change, there was a true range of men's fashion, most of which was head-scratchingly weird.

Apparently Casey Thomas Brown came straight from his stage magic act.

Someone needed to tell Eddie Griffin that the polyester 1970s are long gone.

Anthony Ramos in a vintage 60s Riddler suit.

Funky and fun on Gregg DeGuire.

Henry Golding lives up to his name.

Apparently Chris Pine just finished reading The Great Gatsby (and forgot his socks).

Darren Criss was similarly forgetful, and is wearing an outfit that I think I remember from 1960s bar mitzvahs.

Lakeith Stanfield looks like the result of one of those mix-and-match Colorform sets.

Ricky Martin dressed to serve drinks at the after-party.

Timothee Chalamet in mix and match black: any two of these might have worked well together but mixing all three different fabric types is a black too far.

Michael B. Jordan in what the house of Louis Vuitton is calling an "embroidered floral bib" that I sincerely hope will *not* become a trend! No less weird from the side.

Mahershala Ali looking snazzy in subdued color.

Scott Evans proves you can't go wrong with the classics.

Thank Ghu for the always dapper Chadwick Boseman.

Bad

Too bad the bride didn't pick a more flattering and better quality bridesmaid dress for Rachel Bloom, and a better color. (Not sure I'd be so quick to show the unflattering drape from the side, either.)

Noooooo... When Lupita Nyong'o misses, she misses big! Shocked this is a Vera Wang, usually one of my favorite designers. Never seen a lattice cage skirt before! And no idea what the deal is with the seaweed hair.

Not a fan of the Abominable Snowman look on Danai Gurira.

Betty Gilpin looks like an optical illusion where her bottom tiered half is in slices.

Someone needed to tell Fiona Xie that (1) floral tributes are supposed to be carried, not stuck to your boobs, and (2) you need to wear undies if you're going to yank all of the transparent chiffon skirt aside - way TMI.

Laura Harrier in a hot (pink) mess: the too-short bodice flattens her boobs, the poofs at the elbows are bizarre (and were probably uncomfortable), and the skirt is different lengths for no apparent reason. Plus, this is crying out for a necklace.

All I can figure is that Rachel Weisz got some sticky tape on the side of her dress and then accidentally fell asleep on a furry rug.

Whoever put Rachel Brosnahan in dull ugly grey tied together, and with a tie in the worst possible place on her hips, should never design for anyone ever again. Even less flattering from the side.

Very surprised at this shlumpy number on the effervescent rapper Awkwafina.

Not sure they could have made a dress that would be less flattering to Sophia Bush, and the 1940s cape is tragic as well.

Looks like Jane Fonda is auditioning for the Mother of Dragons: the material is too heavy for her petite figure and truly ugly sleeve cuffs.

Lucy Boynton as a trashy Miss Kitty from Gunsmoke.

Mackensie Hancsicsak was so ashamed of this too-tight, unflattering, ugly short dress that she started to wrap herself in a bedspread to hide it.

Terrific color and flattering plunging neckline (for a change) on Susan Kalechi Watson but the tiered ruffles just beg for someone to spin her in a circle like a top.

From the front, Alison Brie looks like she's going to a Batman tryout; it's awkwardly butterfly-like from the back.

Shangela in a one-person Rose Bowl float.

Kimmy Gatewood in what looks like a high school home ec project gone bad.

Kate Nash in a cartoon-character ill-fitting horror.

Worst Finish of the Night: Sydney Sweeney – this whole look is cheesy. I double-checked and yes, that's a yellow bodice under the grey drape chiffon, not to mention an abrupt waistline that could use a belt or some other coordinating element. Also, make up your mind: cocktail dress or formal length?

Worst Fit of the Night: Rumer Willis in shapeless red with too-long sleeves and no discernible waistline, plus a gapping bodice.

Worst of the Night: Angela Bassett in an ugly grey fold-out paper lantern with a truly awful bodice and no shape whatsoever.

Best

Classy look with some interesting crochet detail on Margot Robbie.

Amy Adams in slinky black with a peplum matched by a ruffle on the bodice and terrific hair and jewelry.

Flattering color and style on Julia Garner (only minus is that the fabric is too stiff for a train).

I surprised myself by liking this flamingo-inspired dress on Gemma Chan: it's good for her build and the scallops add interest.

Great color and flattering design on Sydelle Noel.

Love the color on Sandra Oh and a good fit. I'm even okay with the asymmetric look for a change but I wish they hadn't made a side train. (If the drape had been straight I think it would have been even more striking.)

I hate to admit this but I actually don't mind the fur on Michelle Yeoh and love the detailed bodice.

Melanie Liburd in embroidery that matches her skin tone in a good way and a nice overall look.

This might be the best overall look I've ever seen on Melissa McCarthy - had the sleeves been a bit narrower it would have been perfect.

Love the color and bodice on Aja Naomi King, and great fit at the flattering drape waist.

Fit of the Night goes to this sparkly slinky ombre number on Ellen Wong (nd check out the earrings).

Runner-up for Best of the Night: Great color and fit on Laverne Cox front and back, although wish they'd done a bit more bling on the neckline in the front. (For a minute when I saw the front view first I thought that they'd forgotten to build in bust pads but then I realized the fabric was subtly dotted.) And it moves!

Best of the Night: Samira Wiley in drapey black with an interesting asymmetric bodice, flattering to her figure, and with great hair and earrings.
