The mystery is solved: it's fleas. The redwood deck outside my condo (which I never wanted) is occasionally host to some feral cats and, at least once to my knowledge, a skunk. I remembered that the day before I served as a feast for some creepycrawly I'd been out replacing some of my lawn toys (long story). So, Friday afternoon I put on light clothing and went out on the deck to fix one of the fallen toys for about three minutes. When I stopped before the screen door, I spotted at least eight black dots on my clothes. *sigh*

I spent my enforced indoor Saturday afternoon in white gym socks, white sweat pants, and a T-shirt. I managed to catch and kill three of the little buggers (quite a feat: they're small and really fast). No new bites on my legs but they decided to go for a softer target and I now have two new ones on my neck. I obviously will need a more long-term solution, hopefully one that doesn't involve packing all my dishes and spraying my place with poison.

From an interview with Garrison Keillor in my local newspaper:

"The first task of government is to defend the country, and the second is to secure the blessings of liberty to all of the people, which is a kindness. If the government does not aid the weak against the powerful and serve the common good, then it has no moral purpose."
