This jetlag stuff is ridiculous. Managed to stay awake until 11 but once I got to bed, had trouble falling asleep. Then, my eyes popped open at 3:30 a.m. and the last time I looked at the clock was about 5:45 a.m. The alarm went off at 7 and I drifted in and out of the radio news reports willing myself to get out of bed but not managing until about 9, long past the time I'm usually at work. Luckily, this week is slow with everyone gradually returning from a week off so this went pretty much unnoticed but now the afternoon yawns have kicked in...

The flight out is much better timing in that it leaves San Francisco at about 10 at night. This means that by the time they feed you dinner and you read for a little while, your body is sufficiently tired that even people like me who don't sleep well on planes can manage to doze for a few hours. However, the flight from Sydney leaves at 1:30 in the afternoon and lands at 3 a.m. body time so you're not really getting tired until a few hours before you land, at which point they're just bringing up the lights to serve breakfast. I think that the timing counts a lot more than the east/west factor that many people cite.
