Figured it was time I started getting some of the paperwork together that I'll need for my Australian visa (no matter which kind it is). So, I sent away for an official copy of my birth certificate ($17), found that my proof of divorce (as I suspected) is all in Hebrew, and paid $39 (!) for a certificate letter of good character from my local police department, which I'll get in the mail in 3 - 5 days.

I had assumed they'd also be able to take my fingerprints to send to the FBI for that required "character check," but no. Turns out that nearly all of the agencies that do fingerprinting in the Bay Area are now using LifeScan, an electronic format that is not accepted by the FBI. Calling around to various city police departments returned the same list of phone numbers until I remembered that the city in which my company is located is poor and probably still does stuff the old fashioned way. Sure enough, they still do ink fingerprints on Tuesdays only, so that's what I'll be doing on my lunch hour tomorrow.

Not much progress but at least I feel like I'm doing something in this limbo of waiting...

Thanks to [livejournal.com profile] cahwyguy, a link to a 1948 "ad" for Stan Freberg's proposed musical "Omaha!" The tongue-in-cheek description at the site is almost as good as the 8.5 minute clip. The site itself is a lot of fun, too: "For the Preservation & Presentation of Music Radio History"
