Update: Events of Nov 30
Dec. 5th, 2005 04:04 pmThought I'd try to catch up on other people's news before writing an update on mine but I'm at skip=200 with no sign of already-read messages so figured that before our plane left I'd do my update post first. Stephen and I are sitting in the Portland airport on our way out from SMOFcon, and now I know to bring a lot more reading material than usual with me. We weren't surprised when they sent him off to be specially security screened but we were surprised when they put him in a separate line behind about 7 other people and, of course, given that all of them were given a thorough search and their baggage gone through, it took over 20 minutes to get through. He was livid. (SMOFcon report in a separate posting.)
But, let me start back from When We Last Left Our Heroine. Wednesday I gave up on pretending to sleep at about 5:30 a.m. and started the final push toward dealing with my remaining stuff, finally deciding what I was actually taking with me on my travels versus what was going into boxes as my extra luggage. I went into the office to finish clearing it out and people took me out to lunch. ( Work and the Visa )
I did get a bit emotional when I left my office but didn't have much time to get sentimental because by the time everyone came by to say goodbye, I was late for my planned departure for the car dealer to whom I planned to sell my car. ( The Car )
I didn't have time to get too sentimental about the car because I had to call my hairdresser while they were dealing with the Finance Dept to tell her I was unavoidably late. As planned, Enterprise picked me up at the dealer and took me to their nearby location so I could get a car until I left the next day. Luckily for me, just when they started telling me that they were out of small cars, someone came by to turn one in so they basically checked it to make sure it was still running and turned it around for me. However, that's when the first leg of my Cunning Plan got foiled - I told them I'd be turning in the car at the San Jose airport and they said there'd be a surcharge. Figuring it would be $15 - $20 or so, I said no problem, and then they said "OK, that will be an extra $100" !!!!! Forget that! An older couple with whom I'm friends at my synagogue had offered me a lift to the airport on Thursday so on the spot I decided to take them up on it.
I zipped down to the hairdresser, where thank Ghu a client after me had come in a bit early so I was able to run off to get something to eat while she finished her off. Then I was up until 2 a.m. packing up my kitchen and generating a surprising number of full 20-gallon trashbags.
