White Stuff

Started lightly snowing in Santa Fe on Tuesday night. By Wednesday, it was snowing on and off all day. Wednesday night, between the time we got back from dinner and the time we left our friend's house, there was about 3/4" of new snow that had never been driven on. Having grown up in Miami Beach and lived most of the rest of the time in California, I don't have a whole lot of experience with the stuff but I made it back to our hotel ok and then down to Albuquerque the next morning for our flight to Kansas City and SMOFcon. Lack of a snow scraper meant Stephen's coat got most of the brunt of the windshield snow both mornings. At several points during the drive, large blocks of accumulated snow/ice slid down the windshield. ("The roof is calving," Stephen said.)

Unlike most convention attendees, our flights were on time and we made it to KC without incident. However, walking the 6 or so blocks to our dinner reservation at the Savoy Grill was largely a mixture of slogging through snow or playing slip 'n' slide on the sidewalk. (The restaurant itself is a nostalgic trip: when's the last time you saw lobster thermidor on a menu? And the Caesar salad was only available for 2 people, made tableside in a wooden bowl.)

We all made it back to the hotel in one piece, thankfully. However, it was about 15 degrees and even Stephen was cold! Today the skies are blue and the temps seem to be high enough that the snow is melting so we have hopes that tonight's walk to dinner will be less challenging.

Hope everyone is staying warm!

Dahlia Lithwick in a Slate magazine article on the Supreme Court's deliberations on global warming and the Environmental Protection Agency:
Now, maybe it's because I have a toddler at home, but the EPA's argument, presented by Deputy Solicitor General Gregory Garre, quickly sounds very familiar. 1) I can't clean it up; 2) Even if I could, I don't want to clean it up; 3) You can't make me clean it up; and 4) China is making an even bigger mess. How come China never has to clean it up? When and if all that fails, the EPA, like my son, just puts its hands over its eyes and says there is no mess in the first place.
