On the advice of [livejournal.com profile] eackerman, I read this charming tale by Anthony Capella of a British officer in WWII stationed in Italy who is charged with preventing servicemen from marrying local Italian girls. The locals place an Italian widow who is a talented chef in his office to try to soften him up. A nice story with some stark reminders of what Italy was like during the war, including an eruption of Vesuvius in 1943, which I hadn't known about.
