After an evening in which I waited three times as long for two different trams than I should have, had to deal with drunks on the train, and discovered that the train I was supposed to take home was not running because of track work, I thought my luck had changed when I caught a taxi almost right after I started waiting for one, just as I had started to text Stephen to tell him I was running really late.

Unfortunately, I apparently didn't tuck my phone back into my pocket as securely as I thought I had, as I realized it wasn't there after the taxi dropped me off when I started walking up the stairs. Stephen immediately called the number but got taken straight to voice mail, and two hours later, we haven't gotten any kind of call back. And I was so frazzled that I didn't notice the cab company name or think to get a receipt for the 10-minute drive. Methinks my phone is gone forever... Just what I needed two days before a major trip *sigh*

In my (admittedly limited sample space) experience, Melbourne taxi drivers are particularly bad for stealing phones.

When I lost a phone in a Canberra taxi, they got it back to me the next day, dropping it off where I was staying. When I lost a phone in a Melbourne taxi, it was (most suspiciously) turned off within less than 5 minutes (because I realised I had lost it pretty much immediately, but I rang the taxi company anyway. I didn't have the taxi number, but they said 'all our drivers hand phones into the police, ring the police at this number', so I rang the police, who said, quite bluntly "they say that, but they are lying, they steal them".

OK, so it was a few years ago (about 4?) but it wasn't an encouraging experience.

Sympathetic frustration, or is that frustrated sympathy?

Arrgh!

That happened to me at TorCon 3. I called 8 or 9 different cab companies, to no avail. It's especially a PITA with your upcoming travel.

I've lost 3 cell phones in the last 9 years. One was either stolen off my front steps while I was gardening or it went forever missing in the yard (calling it didn't work). The only one I've ever gotten back was the one that fell out of my pocket in a grocery store parking lot during a particularly brutal winter night. Someone turned it into the store's lost and found. Unfortunately, it was stepped on or run over with a cart before it was found. The screen was smashed, so I had to replace the phone anyway.

Good luck!
