The daughter of conservative nutcase Alan Keyes came out as a lesbian yesterday and he evidently has thrown her out of the house, has stopped speaking to her, and is going to stop paying her college tuition. According to a surprisingly non-sensationalist story in the Washington Post, her parents have known she was a lesbian since the end of high school but only now that she has started to become visible as a gay activist have they taken action against her.

During his failed campaign last fall against Barack Obama (D) for the Illinois Senate seat, Alan Keyes lashed out at Mary Cheney, the lesbian daughter of Vice President Cheney. Keyes told a radio interviewer that Mary Cheney was a "selfish hedonist." Then, without having been asked anything about his own family, he volunteered that "if my daughter were a lesbian, I'd look at her and say, 'That is a relationship that is based on selfish hedonism.' I would also tell my daughter that it's a sin and she needs to pray to the Lord God to help her deal with that sin."

Maya heard the comments and recoiled. "It was kind of strange that he said it like a hypothetical," she says. "It was really kind of unpleasant."

Yesterday? I'm sure I remember this being discussed back before the election, including the eviction, and having her chucked from her (summer?) job.

It was discussed (but not confirmed) during the election. News of the eviction and financial dissolution came out about a week/ten days ago.

My phrasing wasn't entirely clear - sorry about that. Yesterday was her first public "outing" as an activist. From a CBS News report: "Maya Marcel-Keyes will be making her first public appearance as a gay activist at a Valentine Day's rally in front of the Maryland State House, says Dan Furmansky, the leader of Equality Maryland, a gay rights group."

One news site describes her as "Maya Marcel-Keyes, daughter of Alan Keyes and a self-described
young queer anarchist."

To have Keyes's daughter be "a self-described young queer anarchist" is one thing. But his wife as well???
