New stove is now installed, complete with "certified Sabbath mode"!!! Luckily, the existing hole needed less modification than I feared but generated considerably more dust and wood shavings than I anticipated. I'm looking forward to the luxury of having an oven that warms to the actual heat I've set.

Before anyone asks: "Sabbath mode" on stoves isn't really new functionality, it just restores old functionality that got taken away. To wit: on old-fashioned stoves, almost certainly including the one SmofBabe replaced, if you left a burner on it stayed on until you turned it off. So if, on Friday afternoon, you left a burner on under your cholent or kettle, you could have a hot lunch on Saturday, and hot tea or coffee to follow, just as Jews have done for ~2000 years (not the tea or coffee, of course). Modern stoves, however, are too clever for their own good, and switch themselves off after a while, on the assumption that you must have forgotten to do so. So overnight cooking became impossible, until consumers demanded that manufacturers restore the old functionality, under the guise of a "shabbat mode". Now you can choose whether your stove operates in the new mode and turn itself off, or in "shabbat mode", which means it will stay the way you left it, just like your old stove did.

Thanks for the definition. Despite having dated in the Faith, and having worked for Hadassah, I wasn't aware of the issue of stove-auto-shut-off. Glad to know that the "Power of the Consumer" has changed that.

A vast improvement over (shudder) what was there before. Now you have to retrofit the rest of the kitchen to match the new stove. I know I would.[g]
