Weekend Update

So the Torah reading on Saturday morning went ok, especially given that the congregation never hears a reading with music. Luckily, although it was raining when I got up, it had stopped by the time I had to walk. The first reading of 8 lines went perfectly; the second one of 16 lines I got a little lost in the notes in the middle and made my usual mistake: instead of stopping and gathering myself, I just plowed on hoping that I'd eventually find a familiar phrase and get back on track. That indeed happened, but not as soon as I would have liked!
They weren't kidding about their regulars not showing up: there were only 13 people. Interestingly, 4 of those 13 were Americans! Me, a guy from NY who had just gotten married to a woman in the congregation, a guy who now works here, and a woman who moved to Australia to be with her boyfriend. He's now happily married to someone else but she decided to stay here anyway. Everyone was duly impressed with my reading and grateful I'd stepped up to do it.
The Australian Rules football match on Sunday was fun: I went with two people who are big footy fans (worldcon '99 chair Perry Middlemiss and a co-worker at Sun) so they could explain everything to me, plus when they wanted to talk about more esoteric and historical stuff, they had each other. It was a very close game, unlike the one I attended during my DUFF trip, which was a rout, plus one of the teams is one I sort of follow and they won. My co-worker gave me a team scarf to wear during the match to "tag" me.
Aussie Vocabulary Words of the Week: "dak" (to yank someone's pants down as a prank); "ocker" (an unsophisticated working class person)
