How I Spent Super Sunday

The anniversary of my mom's death was last week and as tradition dictates, I always try to get down to LA to visit her grave as near to the date as possible. Before I left for Australia, I booked a ticket on Southwest for Feb 6 -- my brother and I have discovered that staying an entire weekend at his place almost ensures fights but if I get there Sunday morning and leave Sunday late afternoon, it's just enough time for us to go to the cemetery, visit over brunch, see a movie, and for me to leave while we're still enjoying each other's company.
At the time, I didn't realize it was Super Bowl Sunday (silly me, somehow I don't connect football with February!) but by the time I did, it was too late to rearrange the ticket. Turned out fine, though: we went to a movie I wouldn't have ordinarily seen: Being Julia, because of the many award nominations for Annette Bening's performance in it. The movie was a treat -- clever script, solid performances, and fun for people involved in the theater. (My brother and I were giggling when no one else in the movie theater seemed to be.)
I got back in time to watch most of the second half of the game at a friend's house that comes equipped with a 52-inch TV, then went home to fast-forward through my tape of the game, stopping at the commercials. A pretty disappointing crop all around, although I did like the FedEx commercial with Burt Reynolds and the Ameriquest ones about not judging guilty-looking-but-innocent scenarios on face value. I could definitely have lived without the careerbuilder.com monkey theme, and found the McDonalds ads with the Lincoln-face French fry quite a comedown from their usually reliably good Super Bowl ads.
