BAFTA Fashion Review 2023

Late fashion review from the BAFTA awards in February. I"m still a little out of practice post-Covid and forgot how fun it is to check out the fashions.
Julianne Moore in well-fitted black with a wrap that looks like it is Bigfoot's pelt and a fabulous necklace.
Award-winning costume designer Sandy Powell (Shakespeare in Love, The Aviator) channeling Zorro.
Katherine, Princess of Wales in a beautful flowing white gown - not a fan of the high-contrast up-to-the-armpit black gloves and purse, and the equally inexplicabe copper earrings (which she apparently spent £18 on at Zara!)
The string bodice on Hayley Atwell is kinda sorta interesting but the high-waisted skirt probably wrinkled the minute she put it on, and the pendant weirdly falls below the short bodice rather than in the neckline.
I surprised myself by liking this asymmetric black and white pattern dress on Hong Chau with sheer white elbow gloves, I think because it is a great design for her figure.
Wallis Day in a gown that is mostly just swirls of transparent smoke - it's flattering but barely there, and is even more nekkid from the side.
Catherine Zeta-Jones looking amazing at 53 in this beaded gown but it's a bit too sheer for the occasion IMHO (not sure what occasion it *would* be suitable for) and I can't imagine how she managed the enormous silly train for the rest of the night.
Presenter AJ Odudu channeling an Austin Powers outfit and hope she was really careful how she sat, and how she walked in those platform shoes.
Munroe Bergdorf as a trashy Frederick's of Hollywood model complete with fake boobs.
I don't mind the high fashion of this bright orange creation on Florence Pugh but I'm not sure why it needed to be sheer from waist to knees.
"French influencer" Camille Cherriere poses as a nearly nekkid Ophelia.
Blatantly braless, singer Ellie Goulding wanted to make sure everyone knew that the wide plunge down to her waist wasn't the only skin exposed. These ridiculously long sleeves prove there was more material available if they'd wanted to use it.
Looks like Ariana DuBose got caught in a fisherman's net while swimming.
I have to hand it to Rosie Huntington-Whiteley: It's not every day you see a red carpet gown with a metal codpiece.
I like the overall 1950s vibe on this beaded sparkly number on Yvonne Orji but either she's really, really hippy or this design has gone too wide at the hips. Accessories - Gloves: check. Rings on gloved fingers: check. Fur shoulder stole, check. Blingy necklace: check. Shoes: look like bedroom slippers.
I appreciate the pops of color on Danielle Deadwyler but I think there's too much contrast between the textures of the beading on the wide waist belt and the slinky satin.
I love Michelle Yeoh but this outfit is not flattering to her although the fit is good: the color is bad with her skin tone and the sweeping cape sleeves don't fit with the strictly tailored top and trousers. Fabulous jewelry, though.
I think the diamond trellis bodice on Lily James probably doesn't move very well and the bow and clingy fabric emphasize her hips but it has a lot of charm.
Did her shoulder poofs slip down? Are her fingernails so dangerous that they needed padding? So many questions about the sleeves on this gown on Angela Bassett. However, the shoes and purse (front, back, and close-up) are to die for.
Not only is this blush color a washout on Ana De Armas but I can't imagine this bodice flattering anyone regardless of their endowments and the creases between it and her tummy don't say much for the fit.
I feel like I want to use a lint brush on "German influencer" Leonie Hanne and there's some serious side boob and not much back happening.
Gugu Mbatha-Raw looks like she found this in her grandma's attic: the mixture of colors doesn't clash exactly but they're not flattering to her, the choice of using the color of the thin bodice straps for the elbow-length gloves is odd, and the fabric looks washed out.
You rarely see a dress that looks square but this badly fitted short-waisted mess on Lashana Link with a skirt that looks tacked on almost manages it.
Anna Taylor-Joy apparently matched her bandeau minidress to her velvet bedspread and brought along a footman to help carry it.
HoYeon Jung looks like she borrowed someone else's dress: the design is inappropriate for her figure and it's much too long.
Most Bizarre of the Night: The only credit I can find for Andreea Cristea is a stunt credit from 2020 so I have no idea why she was attending the BAFTA Awards but I had to include her just for this description from the Go Fug Yourself crew: "She looks like a pretzel covered in corn flakes"
Worst of the Night: Nicola Coughlan in an ugly bedspread satin that makes her look even shorter and larger than she is. What *were* Valentino Couture thinking?!?
I'd have liked this dress on Kerry Condon better with a plainer skirt but the beautifully fitted and designed bodice made the cut. Also, great necklace choice.
Terrific fit on this partially see-through "connect the jewels" gown on Sophie Turner. (The collar is a bit too high for her neck, though.)
This purple creation with slanted lines of dyed feathers is a stunner on Jodie Turner-Smith so it makes the cut but I think you end up just looking at the dress and not at her, plus odd choice of large blue sapphires for the necklace color.
Viola Davis has made some odd fashion choices of late but I really like the simplicity and terrific fit of this amethyst shimmering caped gown.
Best of the Night: Cynthia Erivo in stunning metallic copper with an asymmetric bodice and metallic collar. (Wish the accessories had been more copper than yellow gold, though.)
Black and White
Monochrome black and white was very popular this yearJulianne Moore in well-fitted black with a wrap that looks like it is Bigfoot's pelt and a fabulous necklace.

Nearly Nekkid
My personal philosophy is that I don't think high-profile award red carpets should be too racy, but clearly some stylists disagree.Wallis Day in a gown that is mostly just swirls of transparent smoke - it's flattering but barely there, and is even more nekkid from the side.
Catherine Zeta-Jones looking amazing at 53 in this beaded gown but it's a bit too sheer for the occasion IMHO (not sure what occasion it *would* be suitable for) and I can't imagine how she managed the enormous silly train for the rest of the night.

Disappointing
This tinfoil dress on Sheila Atim is saved by skin tone and her accessories: matching elbow-length gloves and a five-strand graduated diamond necklace.I like the overall 1950s vibe on this beaded sparkly number on Yvonne Orji but either she's really, really hippy or this design has gone too wide at the hips. Accessories - Gloves: check. Rings on gloved fingers: check. Fur shoulder stole, check. Blingy necklace: check. Shoes: look like bedroom slippers.

Just Bad
Olivia Cooke looks like she grabbed some stuff out of her boyfriend's closet and the skirt she was wearing the night before that she dropped on the floor.Did her shoulder poofs slip down? Are her fingernails so dangerous that they needed padding? So many questions about the sleeves on this gown on Angela Bassett. However, the shoes and purse (front, back, and close-up) are to die for.

Good
Gwendoline Christie in flowing black with interesting ruffles of the skirt reflected in the bodice and the sleeves, plus patent leather accents in the belt and at the neck.I'd have liked this dress on Kerry Condon better with a plainer skirt but the beautifully fitted and designed bodice made the cut. Also, great necklace choice.

Date: 2023-05-09 12:44 am (UTC)Ellie Goulding's gown takes my "most ridiculously absurd" award, though Anna Taylor-Joy certainly places, and, OMG, Andreea Cristea is a strong contender for most ridiculously absurd as well as most bizarre!
The Olivia Cooke link isn't working for me in Firefox.
Curiously enough, I like Michelle Yeoh's outfit. The sweeping cape sleeves in particular work for me in conjunction with the tailoring of the top and trousers. While I wouldn't mind a different color, I don't mind this one on her.
Only the middle link for Leonie Hanne is working for me. The first link brings up your post and the last link (for the back) goes to the Camille Cherriere pic.
Even the gowns making the Good cut fall short to my eyes. Though, yes, I'm in full agreement withyou on both Viola Davis and Cynthia Erivo. I just wish more of the gowns had been in that league.

Date: 2023-05-09 03:04 am (UTC)I completely agree that there weren't very many stunners on the red carpet. I had a lot more just-misses for this event than anything that really impressed me.

Date: 2023-05-09 12:52 am (UTC)My own notes:
If the Princess of Wales had worn gloves and a purse to match the shoes (or earrings), it would have been much cooler.
Camille Cherriere is wearing a 22 year old shower curtain. Pretty doggone dreary.
I looked up “dorky” in the dictionary. Ellie Goulding’s dress was there.
So very much agree with you about Danielle Deadwyler’s look. I loved the colors! If the textures had been a smoother transition, this would have been a stunner!
Michelle Yeoh should always wear jewel tones. An outfit the color of that ribbon would have done it.
If I thought Viola Davis would wear that gown again, I’d make her a necklace involving golden Japanese pearls, faceted amethyst beads, incredible purple Ethiopian opals, gold…but I don’t know her. Huh. Hey Janice! I know *you*! You like purple! Happens I’ve got all of the materials. Hmmmm….
Best jewelry:
Hong Chau’s awesome bird earring. Julianne Moore and Ariana DeBose - two different Bulgari serpent necklaces. (Interestingly, I don’t like Ellie Goulding’s Bulgari snake, but that probably has more to do with her overall look than the bling itself.)
